Volunteering as a Helper
Volunteer requirements:
To volunteer call Joann at (718) 428-2600 or email her with any questions you have. We work hard for the students and we have a ton of fun!
- Must be a high school student between the ages of 14 and18.
- Available every week for 2 hours
- Must make a nine-month commitment, from September through May
There are currently 31 helpers involved with our program. All are high school students. Many of our helpers have been volunteering for several years at Dancing Dreams. We even have our first “second generation” helper – Liz – who has taken over helping Monica from her sister who is now in college.
Quotes from our nine graduating senior Helpers:
Jenna: “ I have been volunteering for two years. I have learned that although these girls have disabilities, they continue to act strong and live life to the fullest.”
—Jenna will be attending Marymount College next year.
Katie: “I have learned that an hour of my time makes such a difference to the dancers.”
Ariela: “I love working with my dancer Danielle. She always has fun and I enjoy seeing her smile”
Brittany K: “Disabilities don’t stop you from doing something; they just alter the way you do it”
Liz: “The most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing your dancer become proud of herself. My dancer Monica now has confidence and continuously strives to become better.”
Pennie: “Seeing their faces beaming with joy as they experience dance, I know that I had made an impact on their lives.”
Allison: “I have learned never to underestimate the power of the human spirit; it can enable us to dance even when it seems our bodies cannot”
Christine: “The most rewarding part of volunteering is knowing I am helping someone achieve a seemingly unreachable dream.”
—Christine will be attending Stanford next year.
